What is a Personal Brand?
Your personal brand is how people perceive you when you’re not in the room. It’s the story they tell about you—your strengths, values, and unique qualities.
Jeff Bezos put it best:
“Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.”
If you don’t define your personal brand, others will do it for you—and you may not like what they come up with. Take control of your narrative.
Step 1: Define Your Identity
What makes you unique?
- If you were a brand, which one would you be (e.g., Nintendo, Pixar) and why?
- What adjectives do you want people to use to describe you?
- What do people often ask your opinion on?
- What skills do you feel most confident using?
- What makes you different (skills, background, point of view)?
- What activity makes you feel in flow?
- What do you want to be known for?
Get Feedback:
Ask friends, colleagues, or mentors:
- What three words would you use to describe me?
- What do you see as my strengths?
- What do you think makes me stand out?
Compare their responses with how you see yourself. What patterns emerge?
Step 2: Define Your Impact
What problem do you want to solve?
- What positive impact do you want to have on others?
- How do you aspire to make their lives better or easier?
Who do you serve?
- Who are the people you want to help?
- What do they need, and how can you provide value?
Step 3: Set a Clear Goal
Where do you want to be in 3 years?
- What would success look like for you?
- What is one goal you want to achieve?
Who can support you?
- Who has already achieved a similar goal?
- Who are people you can connect with that share similar ambitions?
Take Action Today
- What is one small step you can take right now to move closer to your vision?
Step 4: Test, Learn & Adjust
Experiment with Your Brand
- Try sharing your ideas, work, or insights online or in conversations.
- Observe how people react. Does it align with how you want to be perceived?
Refine Based on Feedback
- What parts of your brand are resonating with others?
- Where do you need to make adjustments?
Keep Iterating
- A personal brand is not static—it evolves as you grow.
- Stay open to learning, adapting, and redefining your direction.
